More than ever, players need guidance on how to actually prepare themselves for pro hockey.

For years, the mantra from the Vancouver Canucks was they needed to get better at drafting and developing. The drafting part remains a work in progress. The development part is too.

Chris Higgins replaced Scott Walker in 2019 as Johnson’s assistant, and Granato commended the efforts the two had put in over the past few seasons, monitoring prospects, giving them feedback and guidance on how to make it as professionals but the reality was the Canucks needed more people.

Cirelli and Point are prime examples of players who the scouts had a clear understanding of their strengths and weaknesses. The players he’s seen have the most success as professionals heard consistent feedback from their NHL clubs while still in junior. “If a junior GM looks at it properly it helps you as well as your top players improve,” Gasper said. Both the junior team and the NHL team are working to improve the player so if they’re working together, the players improve and when you have better players you win more.

“We had not spent a lot of summers in the gym leading up to the draft because we played other sports and we leaned a lot on our vision and the way we saw the ice,” Sedin said.
