On a night where it looked like significant storylines were going to be few and far between — Loui Eriksson scratched for the first time this season, Chris Tanev returning after missing 11 games with an ankle injury and blue-liners Ashton Sautner and Guillaume Brisebois getting chances to impress weren’t of marquee value — Elias Pettersson and Antoine Roussel absorbing a pair of brutal head hits became the ugly headline Wednesday at Rogers Arena.

Pettersson, the Calder Trophy front-runner, crumpled to the ice and a hush fell over the faithful because the fall looked too familiar. The slick Swedish centre was sidelined for six games on Oct. 13 by a concussion, and while he did leave Wednesday for concussion protocol, he did return. Gaudette, who was the Hobey Baker Award winner as top NCAA Division 1 player last season with 60 points , has teased of offensive potential in his first full NHL season. The centre didn’t score against the Rangers, but coach Travis Green has lauded his giddy-up, willingness to play in traffic and sell out on every shift.
