Canal+ is set to acquire MultiChoice in 2025, creating a broadcasting giant in Africa. The deal will solidify Canal+'s dominance in the region and unlock significant growth potential.
2025 will be a pivotal year in the history of MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv, as a significant deal is set to reshape the future of South Africa 's leading private broadcaster. MultiChoice anticipates finalizing a transaction in 2025 that will see it acquired by Canal+ , a subsidiary of the French media giant Vivendi SE.
Canal+, a major shareholder in MultiChoice for several years, has gradually increased its stake, ultimately surpassing the 35% ownership threshold mandated by South African business takeover regulations. This triggered a mandatory offer to acquire MultiChoice. MultiChoice initially rejected Canal+'s offer of R109 per remaining share in early 2024. However, an independent board deemed a revised offer of R125 per share to be “fair and reasonable” and recommended that shareholders accept the offer once it becomes unconditional, a target both broadcasters aim to achieve by April 2025. This development has propelled MultiChoice's share price, surging over 30% in 2024, reaching a peak of approximately R120 in April. Despite the high share price, Canal+ persisted in acquiring MultiChoice shares, holding over 45% by June 2024. At that point, acquiring the remaining shares would cost approximately R54 billion. This acquisition will solidify Canal+'s position as a dominant broadcasting force in Africa, a region considered to have substantial untapped potential for subscriber growth compared to more developed continents. Canal+ boasts over 26 million subscribers across 50 countries spanning Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, the Caribbean, and Oceania. The company already enjoys a robust presence in francophone Africa through its Canal+ Afrique subsidiary, which operates in 23 countries, including Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ghana. Conversely, MultiChoice's most substantial subscriber bases are concentrated in anglophone Africa, with key markets beyond South Africa encompassing Nigeria, Kenya, Tanzania, and Zambia
