The government has promised patients will pay with their OHIP cards, not credit cards, but critics warn that for-profit clinics will try to upsell patients and block access through administrative-style fees that the poor cannot afford. “Though Ontario is the latest province to publicly fund surgeries at private clinics to help eliminate the lengthy wait lists caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Alberta and Saskatchewan had previously done the same,” the Angus Reid statement says. “Half of Canadians say this decision by these three provinces does constitute privatization. Men are more likely than women to favour private health care, including 35% in the 35-54 age bracket, the poll found.
