The Canadian veteran proved his mettle to three straight Rugby Canada coaches.

Ray Barkwill, one of the more remarkable stories in Canadian men’s rugby, has been forced to retire due to injury.According to the 38 year old, he suffered a brachial plexus injury in last fall’s Rugby World Cup qualifying tournament — which the Canadians won, booking their ticket to the 2019 tournament in Japan — and hasn’t been able to train since.

“This is an emotional announcement for me. Over the last 10 years I have tried to represent my club, family, friends and country with a high level of professionalism and over the last four years I have done everything I can to help Canada qualify for the upcoming World Cup in Japan and to live out a lifelong dream to play against New Zealand.
