The Quebec man is alleged to have been part of a group that plotted a terrorist act to overthrow the former Haitian president Jovenel Moïse.
MONTREAL—A Quebec man is facing terrorism charges in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the Haitian government and seize power in the Caribbean island nation.
Gérald Nicolas, 51, is alleged to have been part of a group that plotted a terrorist act to overthrow the former Haitian president Jovenel Moïse. “It is alleged that he took concrete actions, including travelling to Haiti to coordinate a group of individuals whose intention was to take part in a coup against the established authority,” the RCMP said in a statement Thursday.
Moïse, 53, was assassinated inside his home in July 2021 by an armed group of foreign mercenaries, most from Colombia. The alleged plot which resulted in Thursday’s charges is said to have been unrelated to the 2021 assassination.
