Nurse pots the winner after Swedes force overtime in the dying seconds.

The Canadians got a big scare in the quarterfinals Thursday, as Swedish goaltender Emma Soderberg turned them back again and again and Hilda Svensson scored in the dying seconds of the third period to force overtime. Sarah Nurse scored in the extra period, her second goal of the game, to give Canada a 3-2 win and save her teammates from what could have been an embarrassing defeat.

“Not the way we wanted to start, but when you look at our last two periods, we had a ton of zone time, so there’s lots to build on,” Nurse said. “Not every game is going to be 7-0, 8-0 anymore. But we have every faith in our team, and I think we’re getting better every game.” The Swedes had not scored a goal against Canada since a 7-1 loss in 2004. But, down 2-0, they got a power-play goal from Lina Ljungblom and Svensson’s equalizer with 9.8 seconds left in regulation. The U.S. scored twice in the final minutesThe Americans earned a berth in the semifinals with a 3-0 win over Germany to keep a Canada-U.S. gold-medal game on track. The two nations have met in the final in 20 of the last 21 world championships.

“I didn’t think we came out with our best tonight,” said U.S. forward Amanda Kessel. who scored one of the American goals. “We haven’t faced Germany for a while, they play hard, they play structured. And their goalie was unbelievable. It was a good learning game for us to know that you have to bring your best every shift.”
