Dr. Theresa Tam says Canadians should practice safe sex and reduce the number of partners to reduce the spread of monkeypox in Canada.

The World Health Organization declared the virus a public health emergency of international concern over the weekend.

“We’ve also been working with apps, Grindr and others, to make sure people get the messaging in order to link them to the right information, and also access the vaccine and know what to do if they think they may have monkeypox,” she said. While not considered strictly a sexually transmitted infection, it is spread through contact with bodily fluids or scabs and contaminated personal items like clothing, bedding, sex toys or toothbrushes.Article content

The federal government has so far deployed more than 70,000 doses of the vaccine to provinces and territories, and about 27,000 of those have been used.
