Canada's population will hit 40 million Friday and is growing at a 'record-setting pace'

Growth briefly faltered between 2020 to 2021 as a result of border restrictions made to slow COVID-19, but the numbers soon picked back up. In 2021, more than 8.3 million people — 23 per cent of the total population — was a landed immigrant or permanent resident in Canada. That’s the greatest proportion since Canada’s Confederation in 1867.
