Canada reverses course, grounds Boeing 737 Max 8s in the country GlobeBusiness
An Ethiopian Airlines Max 8 crashed on Sunday, killing 157 people, after the pilot reported control problems shortly after taking off. A Lion Air Max 8 crashed in similar circumstances near Jakarta in October and killed 189 people. Both crashes are under investigation.
On Tuesday, Toronto-based Sunwing Airlines Inc. said has “suspended” flights of its four Max 8 jets due to “evolving commercial reason,” joining dozens of airlines and countries in halting use of the new planes amid safety concerns. Though there is no proof of links, the twin disasters have spooked passengers, led to the grounding of most of Boeing’s 737 MAX fleet and hammered shares in the world’s biggest plane maker.
Ethiopia Airlines spokesman Asrat Begashaw told Reuters it was still unclear what happened on Sunday, but its pilot had reported control issues - as opposed to external factors such as birds.
