TORONTO — Canada Post has announced the grand opening of its new Albert Jackson Processing Centre in Scarborough, east Toronto, set for Sept. 21. The new facility becomes Canada Post’s largest, fastest and greenest parcel sorting facility, stated a release. It has the capacity to process more than 60,000 packages per hour, or more than one million packages a day.

The facility doubles the company’s processing capacity in the Greater Toronto Area, where most of Canada Post’s parcels originate. The processing centre is named after Albert Jackson, who is believed to be the first Black letter carrier in Canada. He faced significant racial barriers in his workplace and was initially barred from working as a letter carrier, before winning the right to do the job he was hired for. Members of his family attended a naming ceremony in 2022.
