Canada launches consultations on oil and gas emissions cap, Alberta warns against federal interference ableg abpoli cdnpoli
Alberta Energy Minister Sonya Savage and Environment and Parks Minister Whitney Issik issued a joint statement Monday saying the province has taken action on climate change but Alberta will not accept any plan “that seeks to interfere in our constitutionally protected ability to develop our resources.”
The Liberal government is aiming to cut emissions 40 per cent to 45 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030, and targeting net-zero emissions by 2050. To achieve this, policymakers need to enforce a sharp reduction in pollution from the oil and gas sector, responsible for 27 per cent of Canada’s emissions.
The oil and gas sector, provinces and other stakeholders have until the end of September to comment on the discussion paper, and the government expects to outline the design of the emissions cap early next year.Article content
