Canada will join an international project to build an orbiting space facility around the moon, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday. Known as the Lunar Orbiting Platform-Gateway, the U.S.-led effort is envisioned as the next phase for human space exploration and a potential stepping stone for a human mission to Mars.
The Prime Minister added that Canada’s involvement will entail providing the new platform with a robotic arm which he called “Canadarm 3.”“We’re stepping up,” Mr. Trudeau said during a press conference at Canadian Space Agency headquarters in Saint-Hubert, near Montreal. “Canada is going to the moon.”
Following the announcement, Mr. Trudeau turned the virtual podium over to Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques, who is currently midway through a six-month stint aboard the space station. “Today’s announcement is a clear message to the next generation of explorers,” Dr. Saint-Jacques said. “Canada is inviting you to dream big.”
