Dogs from 100 countries will not be allowed to come into the country after Sept. 28.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is banning imports of commercial dogs from 100 countries with a high risk for rabies, following in the footsteps of the U.S., which implemented similar measures more than a year ago.
“It’s really disappointing,” said Kayley Henning of Toronto’s Stray to Play, which she helped co-found in 2020. “Our original shelter partner is actually in Turkey,” which is on the list of banned countries. Rabies is fatal for dogs and people if left untreated. Typically transmitted through bites, the disease can also be transmitted through contact with saliva in a person’s eyes, nose or mouth, or through broken skin.
