Breaking: Canada loses to U.S. in women’s world hockey championship

The Canadians were good in Sunday night’s gold-medal game at the women’s world hockey championship. But in the end, the Americans were better.

Up 3-2 early in the third period, the sellout crowd of 4,635 at Brampton’s CAA Centre saw the Canadians give up a tying goal, followed by two from U.S. star Hilary Knight on the way to a 6-3 victory by the Americans. Cayla Barnes scored into an empty net to seal defeat for the hosts, who had been shooting for a third straight title. The 33-year-old Knight finished with a hat trick and boosted her career total at the worlds to a record 101 points.

The vocal crowd saw the home side take the lead three times, only to watch the Americans storm back each time. Canadian captain Marie Philip-Poulin had opened the scoring, while Brianne Jenner had the crowd rocking with a pair of second-period goals. Caroline Harvey, a 20-year-old defender, scored the tying goal for the U.S. in the third, setting up a tense finish. Knight hammered home a slapshot on a power play for the eventual winner, then tipped in an insurance goal minutes later.

The Americans won for the first time since 2019 — the last of five in a row — with a roster featuring 11 players age 23 and under.
