As Canada Day looms, it is important to acknowledge the impact colonialism continues to have on Indigenous communities, according to the Anishinabek Nation.
The Anishinabek Nation is a political advocacy organization, representing 39 First Nations across the lands of Ontario.
In a statement Thursday, leadership highlighted the injustices of Canada’s residential school system, as well as its Indian Day Schools. The compensation comes as part of a 2019 settlement agreement between the government and survivors, some of whom suffered physical and sexual abuse.“Last year, we saw many peoples and allies across Anishinabek Nation wear orange in support of Indian Residential School Survivors,” said Lake Huron Regional Deputy Grand Council Chief Travis Boissoneau .
