Love Island’s 2019 winners, Paige Turley and Finn Tapp, have split after three years together. Paige says the pair are ‘still really good friends,’ but here at Metro we’re a little divided on whether you can ever truly be pals with an ex 👀
I should start by saying I’m not personally friends with my exes, mainly because I don’t have any exes. But, I have felt the benefits of a relationship becoming a lasting friendship in my personal life.
A prime example was when they took me and my brother on holiday to Turkey together, despite having been divorced for a good decade. My mum is happily single now and my dad is engaged, but my dad still gives my mum Christmas presents on occasion, and they often go to the same social events, given there’s so much crossover between their friends and interests.
If you still see your ex as a romantic prospect, friendship will only lead to disappointment. It’s about intention and integrity: don’t say you want to be friends if you actually want to be together. ‘Maybe it’s because the community is fairly small or because we’re forever bound by a first date full of trauma dumping. Lesbians just can’t help but keep that friendship candle burning,’ she says.Being friends can be for the greater good of the friendship group
