Some of Australian sport’s most high-profile concussion sufferers are supporting a cooling headgear which, its developers say, can drastically aid recovery from head knocks.
“We’d get a head knock and do sweet eff all,” says former AFL player Shaun Smith, recipient of a $1.4m insurance payout for the debilitating impacts of head knocks and concussions have had on his post-playing life.almost 30 years ago, nods grimly alongside him, recalling his return to playing 20 days after the head knock that “broke” his brain and changed his life.
With winger Reuben Garrick modelling the silicone-based headgear and NRLW star Millie Elliott a keen observer, the PolarCap device is a portable cooling system that pushes cold fluid around a headcap worn by a player for at least 45 minutes immediately after an injury or concussion diagnosis.
“The other main use is for us to reduce that risk of developing concussion symptoms or prolonged symptoms that will delay the recovery. “It actually feels really nice, especially when your brain’s rattled, you’re overwhelmed, you’ve got a headache – it eases that straight away,” he says.“And the fact that you’re doing something rather than just resting or not doing anything, it just feels good to be doing something.”
