ICYMI: Can the Flames catch the Jets in playoff race?
“It comes down to what we do here, in our group … ” stressed Flames goalie Jacob Markstrom, fresh off his first shutout of the season — a 40-save show-off in Minnesota — and looking to continue his recent roll in Friday’s clash with the Anaheim Ducks . “I mean, if we win every game that’s left, I think we’re in good position.”
And what has Weegar seen since, in a dramatic victory over the Stars and then a shutout/shootout squeaker against the Wild? “But this time of year is exciting, to be part of that playoff push, and we’re just a few points out. Obviously, we’re watching the standings close and we got to watch the Winnipeg game and everybody is keeping a close eye. But we just have to focus on ourselves. Like we’ve been telling you guys, it’s about us in here. Everybody has good confidence and a good mindset right now. And we have to keep it going.
While Markstrom has strung together a handful of impressive outings, perhaps his best stretch of the entire season, Winnipeg’s own star netminder has seemingly sprung a leak. Connor Hellebuyck has been shelled for a total of 22 goals over his past five starts and twice over that span was yanked after two periods. During Wednesday’s 4-2 home loss to the Wild, less a minute after his own club cashed at the opposite end, Hellebuyck allowed a groaner through the wickets to Ryan Hartman.
