rtificial intelligence pioneer Alan Turing infamously asked many years ago, “Can machines think?” Today, Oxford mathematician Marcus du Sautoy poses an equally provocative question: Can machines create?
Inspired by the Turing Test, du Sautoy proposes a “Lovelace Test” . To pass it, an algorithm must produce something that is new, surprising and of value. Oh—and its coder must be unable to explain how the AI created it.sat down with du Sautoy to discuss the ways in which AI can push the boundaries of human creativity.

If you look at music, it’s not going to put the Mozarts, the Beethovens, the Miles Davises out of jobs, but it might well put second-tier composers out of jobs, those who are making their way by writing music for advertising, corporate videos, computer games. We’re already seeing music being written by AI which is “good enough”—that’s the phrase I kept hearing, “good enough”—for those applications.
Setting aside the question about whether AI can be truly creative independent of its coder, where do you see the greatest potential for AI to augment human creativity? I certainly recognize this in my own work. I work with other mathematicians around the world, and I find that by working with another person, I can make far greater progress. For example, I have a collaborator in Germany. I’m this kind of mad creator, trying different things, breaking things, putting things together, and he’s the discriminator, saying, “No, that doesn’t work” or “That’s not quite right.
