Even the different subtypes of depression exist on continuums and can be expressed differently in different people. for decades has provided descriptions of various depressive disorders and their subtypes, it still fails to address what experienced clinicians recognize, and has been put forth by numerous researchers over the years : aggression is not an unusual indicator of depression.

Perhaps the closest the DSM-5 comes to recognizing aggression as a symptom of depression is noting that irritability, described as"... persistent anger, a tendency to respond to events with angry outbursts or blaming others, or an exaggerated sense of frustration over minor matters," is not uncommon. While aggression is recognized in disruptive mood dysregulation disorder of, a depressive condition, with its trademark tendency for explosive reactivity, it is limited to ages 7-17.
