A noxious pest from Africa has found its way onto the world's largest sand island, K’gari. Experts are calling for the invasive fish to be eradicated to stop it from threatening native species.

Queensland's environment department says tilapia has been found in the lagoon at Kingfisher Bay Resort .An invasive fish species from Africa has been found in a resort's lagoon on K'Gari off Queensland's coast.

"As the landowner, they have a general biosecurity obligation to take all reasonable and practical measures to minimise the biosecurity risks associated with tilapia," the spokesperson said. The department has identified machinery from the mainland to clear aquatic weeds as one potential way the species was brought to the island.

"There are now processes in place to ensure this machinery will be arriving and leaving clean when undertaking annual clearing on K'gari."Professor of aquatic ecology at James Cook University, Damien Burrows, said the tilapia posed a major risk to K'Gari's waterways and urged swift eradication action.

"Tilapia are a serious pest, internationally known as one of the most serious fish pests in the world."Photo shows A fisherman holds up three large fish with a lake and another fisher behind him.
