A study on calls to crisis help lines in 19 countries shows a striking similarity in the pandemic's toll on mental health.

As the coronavirus spread across borders early in the pandemic, calls to global help lines showed a striking similarity in the toll on mental health — from China to Lebanon, Finland to Slovenia.

The researchers also analyzed data through spring 2021 from two of the largest help lines, in France and Germany. Call patterns in those two countries followed upswings and downswings in infections and government restrictions, and the concerns raised were similar to those early in the pandemic. In the U.S., crisis help lines have been heavily promoted throughout the pandemic and that may have broadened their use, Koenen added.To thrive in a lonely century, we’ll need more goods and services designed to deliver connection such as AI “friends” and daytime discos for retirees.
