Shoplifting and thefts have become an everyday occurrence for some businesses once again, while drug dealers appear to have returned to the area.

There has been a call for an increased police presence on the Ormeau Road as petty crime, drug dealing and anti-social elements begin to return.

Chris O'Reilly, who runs the Mace on the Ormeau Road, said that in the past couple of months he has noticed an increase in anti-social elements coming to the area and that one apartment block in particular appears to be the focal point of many of the issues. "Running a shop here, we tend to be the first to become aware of the problems as we have to deal with shoplifting everyday and you can tell by the items that are being taken, such as tinfoil, bicarbonate soda and very sweet sugary items, that this often relates to drug use.

"However, there are challenges facing the area which are causing concern for the community and local businesses. It is essential that we see action to provide reassurance that these issues are being taken seriously, to ensure this area continues to thrive. "I have been working with residents and businesses on these issues to try to find solutions, and will be raising it as Chair of the South Belfast District Policing and Community Safety Partnership to help ensure a proper focus is put on the area."
