The small country town of Mullewa is reeling from a spike in crime, but locals say the solutions need to go further than more policing.
What's next?An Aboriginal leader says reconnecting children to culture is key to fixing the youth crime cycle in a small Midwest Western Australian town, but the community needs more resources to do that.
Police said a surge in youth offending had begun to taper off in Mullewa after more police and aerial resources arrived. The ABC understands the town's Youth Centre, described as doing "wonders" for its children, was recently closed after an incident where a knife and a baseball bat were brought inside.
Meanwhile, the opposition has taken aim at the state government for "continued ignorance" of the issue and launched a petition demanding initiatives "aimed at prevention, rehabilitation, and support for at-risk youth".Yamatji man and traditional custodian Leedham Papertalk lives in Mullewa, was previously a police officer, and is known as Uncle by many of the children.
"When we start talking on Country about Aboriginal stuff they all sat down and listened. And then they started asking questions," he said. However, he said a "lack of funding" ended the previous programs and he believed Mullewa was considered too small and near to Geraldton for serious funding to be allocated to it.
