California's plan to ban the sale of all new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks sold within the state after 2035 is expected to become official Thursday.
of all new gasoline-powered passenger cars and trucks in California after 2035.California Air Resources Board is expected to approve a rule to that effect, making the ban an official part of the state's regulations. The body oversees efforts to reduce air pollution.
Gasoline-powered vehicle emissions have been credited as the top source of greenhouse gas pollution, significantly contributing to the nation’s global warming crisis. More than dozen other states have indicated plans to adopt the California’s auto emission standards, with five more set to follow later.
The new climate spending bill signed into law recently by President Joe Biden includes $14 billion in tax incentives for electric vehicles buyers. Both the California change and the climate bill come two months after the Supreme Court limited the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's power to curb carbon emissions.
