Javier Olivarez Jr. was convicted of second-degree murder and other counts stemming from a crash that killed a beloved doggy daycare service owner in 2019.
The sentencing hearing for Javier Olivarez Jr., convicted by a jury of murder, was postponed — however the victim impact statements went forward in Long Beach on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. Olivarez led Long Beach police on a brief pursuit in a stolen cargo van, running a stop sign and slamming into an SUV, killing Jessica Bingaman and five dogs in May 2019. A Los Angeles man was sentenced to 49 years to life in state prison Wednesday, Oct.
Olivarez’s public defender, Efren Navar, told the court Wednesday that Olivarez fell into drug addiction after his kids were taken away from him by their mother. He said Olivarez was remorseful and that anything above a 15 years to life sentence would amount to a life sentence given Olivarez’s age.“I was lost in drugs,” he said. “If I would have been in the right state of mind, I wouldn’t have done this. It hurts that I put a family through this much pain.
Goul characterized the trial as “highly disturbing,” and said the repercussions of Olivarez’s actions, which amounted to a series of choices made by the defendant, affected numerous citizens and led to the irreparable loss.“We all know in our heart he didn’t care,” Lawson said. “He put on a show. He had no remorse.”
