SANTA CRUZ — A regional coastal protection oversite agency voted Thursday night to permit a large-vehicle overnight parking ban in the city of Santa Cruz for one year.
The 9-2 Coastal Commission vote occurred after nearly a two-and-a-half-hour discussion and included a “reluctant” approval from newly seated Commissioner Justin Cummings. Cummings, elected as a Santa Cruz County supervisor in November, served on the Santa Cruz City Council when its Oversized Vehicle Ordinance came before the body — and voted no on approving the new law, at the time.
At the permit’s expiration, Santa Cruz officials would need to start at square one in obtaining approval for the coastal permit, but would no longer be under the oversite of the Coastal Commission unless the issue was appealed back up to that body, Central Coast District Director Dan Carl said. Per an amendment added Thursday, the city will be directed to create a stakeholder advisory group to oversee the law’s implementation.
The Oversized Vehicle Ordinance bans vehicles 20 feet or longer and/or wider than 7 feet and taller than 8 feet from parking from midnight to 5 a.m. without special limited permits. Three tiers of “safe parking” spelled out in the original ordinance are already underway, though the program’s 71-space maximum capacity described by city officials in their permit application has not yet reached its full potential.
