Calgary Stampede: The faces of chuckwagon racing yyc
Sitting on the wagon seat, their legs braced against the box as they haul on the reins to keep the horses in check, are the drivers. At the front and back of the rig are outriders, the reins of their own horses in one hand as the lead man helps steady the wagon horses at the starting barrel while the outrider at the back gets set to throw a symbolic rubber stove into the wagon box.
They did that just for fun, for bragging rights. These days, though, the chuckwagon races are high-stakes events and about the only thing they have in common with the wagon races of more than a century ago is that stove — now rubber, not iron — the outrider is about to fling into the box. Then the horn blares and they’re off. The horses fly into a gallop, jerking the wagon off the starting line as the drivers haul on the reins to pull the teams to the right around the second barrel and then to the left as they complete the figure-eight pattern back around the first barrel.
