Calgary Police Service joins calls for tougher bail reforms yyc

Calls for bail reform from police and provincial officials across Canada got louder recently in the fallout of the shooting death of Const. Grzegorz “Greg” Pierzchala, a 28-year-old rookie Ontario Provincial Police officer, on Dec. 27 last year. One of the two people charged with first-degree murder in Pierzchala’s death, Randall McKenzie, was out on bail for 2021 firearms offences, had a lifetime ban on owning guns and had a warrant out for his arrest at the time of the fatal shooting.

Through its offender management section, police completed 274 directed patrols on one of those offenders since 2019 to ensure the man was abiding by release conditions. Cook says it’s a drain on police resources, and legislative reform for the bail process for violent repeat offenders and firearms charges “is required.”Article content

After taking heat from the premiers and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre on the topic, Trudeau said last week that his government is looking closely at the issue. Additionally, Moses Danto, the accused in a Kensington shooting in September, was also out on bail when he allegedly shot a man and a woman at a bar in the area, resulting in what police called “life-changing injuries” for the woman.

“The states that anyone who’s in police detention is expected to receive bail unless it’s not justified — it’s an accused’s right to be released,” said King.
