Calgary must stop missing opportunities for new affordable housing yyc
· Louise Riley Library and parking lot would be an ideal spot for a mixed income project in partnership with the private sector.
· Westbrook Station has been surrounded by the world’s biggest weed patch for more than 10 years now. It would be an ideal site for a diversity of housing options next to an LRT station and shopping centre. The city should have sold the land to several developers to create a model transit-oriented community with a deadline for development.
· The province has land ripe for residential development like the surface parking lots next to the Kirby Centre LRT station. It would be perfect for mixed-income housing. Or the land just west of the Provincial Courthouse in the middle of downtown. · The 190,000-square-foot Viscount Bennett School has been under-utilized for more than 20 years and vacant since 2018. The building could easily have been subdivided to allow for a mix of different uses including affordable housing 20 years ago. The entire site has now been sold to Minto Properties. It will be interesting to see if their proposed development has an affordable housing component and how long it will take to redevelop the site.
