Ironically, it was the historic lack of support for female jazz musicians, and the story of a pregnant jazz musician specifically, that at least indirectly led to the formation of The Ostara Project. Calgary’s Lisa Buck had been made aware of the severe gender imbalance in the jazz world through her role as artistic director of the BuckingJam Palace, a not-for-profit foundation that holds jazz house concerts.

“It really made me think that life hadn’t changed very much since Judi’s days and how much that burden falls on women and women’s careers when life stuff happens and they don’t have a supportive community,” says Buck. “So I got that vision of wanting to place her, anachronistically, that might have been her support and still doesn’t exist today. But I hope by putting it out there, maybe we can put out a visual model for the future.

While giving new musical backing and a symbolic community to Singh may have been the catalyst for the project, it’s the women’s stories about life as a female jazz musician that take centre stage in the documentary.

One of the best outcomes of that weekend is that it turned into a permanent band. It turns out Proznick had always wanted to put together an all-female act and had even chosen the name – Ostara is the Germanic goddess of the spring equinox – for the band. On Nov. 18, the Ostara Project’s self-titled debut will be released on Vancouver’s Cellar Music Group featuring the same lineup as appears in the documentary.
