on Thursday that the final 90-ft-piece of steel will be set in place this week on the new-and-improved BMO Centre. It marks a new milestone for the project after crews spent the last 11 months installing 9,000 metric tons of steel to form the base structure of the building.
The steel-build is a critical part of the building’s design. Spanning up to 180 ft. long and 19 ft. wide, it allows for large spaces that don’t require support columns, while also being able to support weights over four times greater than assembly-type buildings. “In fact,” the CMLC says, “the load allowance in the exhibition hall allows for fully-loaded semi-trucks to be driven inside the building.
“This is an incredible milestone on a key project that will help the Calgary Stampede welcome the world—and our community—in 2024 and beyond,” said Calgary Stampede CEO Joel Cowley. “We can’t wait to open the doors to western Canada’s largest convention centre; we have already seen great interest in our remarkable new gathering space, with conferences already booked for June 2024, onwards.”The BMO Centre originally opened in 1982.
