Potvin and Weaver are fundraising for a non\u002Dprofit working with charities in the Global South to support children living with disabilities.
For one, both Potvin and Weaver — the men behind the Old Guys in Action group — are in their 70s, and are tackling what’s an intense feat of athleticism for those of any age.
“We had a group in Uganda make these for us, and they call them boogaalis, which in the dialect in Uganda means ‘bamboo bike.’ The frame is all made with bamboo. It’s surprisingly heavy,” Potvin said from his Calgary home Sunday. They combined that frame with pieces of their own bikes from home.
They began the odyssey in fall 2021, travelling from White Rock, B.C., to Medicine Hat. Weaver continued the ride this spring, making it to Lake Superior. “The kids with handicaps and physical disabilities in Africa, they’re neglected . . . You can’t get any lower on the list of priorities. If you’re a kid with a disability in Africa, forget it,” he said.
