CAF Chief Gives Major AFL Update
After Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned the competition's inaugural winners last season, many have been wondering when the next edition of the tournament will take place.
Masandawana defeated Petro Atletico Club, Al Ahly and Wydad Athletic Club on their away to being crowned AFL champions, but they will not be defending their title in 2024, according to CAF's director of competitions, Samson Adamu. Instead, the AFL will likely make its return in 2025, when it is believed that 24 teams will be taking part, with other South African sides such as Orlando Pirates potentially set to be included.

"I think the plans fully for the AFL, it is highly unlikely this year because we only have a few months until the end of the year, but the plans will be revealed for next year, as to when it is going to happen and what are the plans for it," Adamu told "But there is advanced talk in terms of the preparation for the AFL to make sure that the AFL is bigger than before.
