There’s plenty of Germanic influence in this three-row electric SUV.
—looks comfortingly traditional. In shape, control layout, and presentation, the Tang doesn't scream"EV"; rather, it feels like a big luxury SUV that just happens to have an electric powertrain.
From the inside, there's a great deal of Audi-esque detail in the Tang. One of the many things we like about Audi is the emphasis it puts on the tactile feel of the controls, and the Tang has a similar ethos: Everything in the cabin, from the chunky shifter to the seat upholstery, feels substantial.
, BYD's center and instrument panel screens are exceptionally well executed, with sharp graphics, smooth animation, and instant response. The stereo sound quality is good; not great, but good.The BYD Tang's back seat is big and comfortable, with a flat floor, adjustable backrest, a great view out of the panoramic sunroof, and air vents aplenty.
We found some distinctly Germanic elements to the driving experience, or at least a Chinese interpretation thereof. The seats are comfortable but firmly spung. The steering had a nice heft to it, with good feel and decent feedback. Even the bottom-hinged accelerator felt great underfoot, though it took a while for the regenerative brake to cut in when we lifted off. The dashboard indicated a full battery and 400 km of range, same as the Tang's WLTP-rated range .
But there were also some non-Germanic elements. São Paulo, as we learned during our Dolphin test drive, is a tough place to evaluate a car; smooth pavement is an art form that has apparently not yet come to this vibrant city. The Tang's ride feels bouncy and firm, with a short-amplitude pitching motion that made for quite a bit of head toss.
