Buttigieg told reporters in a Zoom call on Tuesday that Shapiro along with other members of the state’s federal delegation pushed hard for federal dollars to support the South Bridge project. The 64-year-old span is critical to the region’s highway network, for both passenger vehicles, as well as tractor trailers. It was first identified as being in need of replacement in early 2021.
Buttigieg said without the federal dollars, “it was just not clear how this could get done or if it could get done, it would have had a cascading effect by devouring funding that PennDOT would have needed for many other road and bridge projects around the state.” Commuters in recent months have experienced congestion due to lane closures as bridge inspections and other work was conducted.
