Bernie doesn’t want their cash. When one spouse of a billionaire sent his campaign $470 last summer, the Vermont senator. Elizabeth Warren is accepting billionaire donations, but she is also proposing a 6% wealth tax on the richest people in the country—something that would wreak havoc on billionaires’ business empires. Michael Bloomberg, a billionaire in his own right, is self-funding his campaign—he’s spent aboutdoing it—and isn’t taking any outside funds, regardless of who wants to send them.
That leaves Biden. He should have an easy sales pitch when trying to lure backers who previously supported Klobuchar and Buttigieg. More than one-third of Buttigieg’s billionaires have already given money to the former vice president this cycle, according to a review of FEC filings:Pete Buttigieg’s campaign received contributions from 61 billionaires or their spouses over the course of his campaign, according to areview of Federal Election Commission filings.
Klobuchar’s kingmakers have also proven likely to shell out for Biden. In fact, he’s the only remaining candidate that any of them have already supported, according to FEC filings:found that Amy Klobuchar’s campaign picked up contributions from 33 billionaires and their spouses during the course of her campaign, according to a review of Federal Election Commission filings.
Any new campaign donors would be helpful for the former vice president. Even more helpful, however, would be new super PAC donors. Donations that go directly to campaigns are limited to $5,600 per race . But there are no limits on how much someone can donate to super PACs, which cannot coordinate directly with candidates but can run massive advertising campaigns in support of them., a super PAC supporting Biden, Unite the Country, had already received big checks from three billionaires.
