Although it was still unclear how many injuries occurred in the crashes, state police have made contact with the occupants of every vehicle.

The crashes are in a two-mile span, between mile markers 86.5 and 88, state police Public Information Officer Trooper David Beohm said. The crash was first reported around 4:30 p.m. All southbound lanes were closed in the area, and northbound lanes were experiencing rubbernecking.

According to PennDOT spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler, one crash involved four or five tractor trailers and a passenger bus, that was carrying 30 people. The bus line, based in Ephrata, is sending a bus to pick up passengers who were not injured in the crash. In addition to that, another bus is heading to the scene to help pick up other uninjured occupants of other vehicles involved, including the 15 involved in a crash at mile marker 86.5, PennDOT said. Schreffler did not have a location for where the people would be taken.

Although Schreffler could not comment on any injuries, she said that state police made contact with the occupants of every vehicle.Southbound traffic is being diverted at Exit 90 to Route 443, rejoining I-81 at Grantville. Due to a separate crash on I-78 that is closing westbound lanes, traffic is being diverted between exits 8 through 22, also joining 81 at Grantville.
