, and one in particular: “leaving no trace.” But some discard this ethos at the exit gate, disposing of their trash in the desert, illegally dropping it along the highway or finding other inappropriate places to dump it.One such place is the Cross Roads Car Wash in Truckee, California, owned by Mark Lowenstern. His business has turned into a de facto dumping ground just off Highway 80. Lowenstern has seen it all over the past 30 years, from computers to mattresses being dumped at his facility.
“What I’ve seen are large construction bags of trash, alcohol bottles, tons of food, tents and large aluminum poles from shade structures,” says Lowenstern. “People just unload their motor homes. I’ve seen people sometimes spend four to six hours pulling everything out of their vehicles, then wash their cars and their belongings. One camper can fill up half of my capacity.”
Lowenstern has security cameras, but illegal dumping is extremely hard to prosecute and law enforcement rarely presses charges. “The most egregious ones are late at night, with people unloading everything you can think of. When asked whether the increase in business offsets the additional expenses and headache, Lowenstern just shook his head no and laughed.
