Astros' go-ahead single in 9th seals win over Diamondbacks
Ahead in the count, Seth Beer chased a cutter down and in, fouling it off. Three pitches later, he jogged to first base with a two-out walk. The fourth-inning sequence on Tuesday night illustrated both the bad and the good of the Diamondbacks’ offense through the opening week of the season.
The Diamondbacks lost for the fourth time in five games on Tuesday night. Left-hander Madison Bumgarner turned in a solid five innings, but closer Mark Melancon, working a tie game in the ninth, gave up the go-ahead run on Michael Brantley’s two-out single. Those numbers are ugly. They are indisputable. The Diamondbacks are not hitting. But those numbers also leave out something that gives the Diamondbacks hope they are on the right track.
But Lovullo has noticed enough at-bats in which his hitters have started out stubborn before turning overly aggressive. Beer’s fourth-inning at-bat was an example of that. Though he wound up reaching base, he expanded the zone in a 2-1 count.
