The Vodacom Bulls outmuscled and outfought Leinster on Friday in Dublin to book their place in the inaugural Vodacom United Rugby Championship final.
Leading the seven-time PRO14 champions Leinster 17-14 at half time, the determined Bulls dominated the physical battle and hardly gave an inch on defence to record a first – and momentous – victory for a South African URC side in Ireland.
Flyhalf Chris Smith opened the visitors’ account with three points from the kicking tee, and the South Africans thought they had their first try through Canan Moodie after a sustained period of power running and pick and drives. The Irish looked more than a little shell shocked before Robbie Henshaw showed good awareness to open Leinster’s try tally.
