Bulls & Bears: NBA Draft delivered a ‘Canada Day’ preview with four picks

The July 1 national holiday isn’t officially until next week, but it was certainly Canada Day Thursday at the 2022 NBA Draft at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

It’s only the second time in NBA history that two Canadians have been drafted into the NBA with top-10 picks. The last time was in 2014 when Andrew Wiggins went first overall to Cleveland, followed by Nic Stauskas, taken eighth overall by Sacramento. Canadians went back to back again in the second round, when Gonzaga guard Andrew Nembhard of Aurora, Ont., joined Mathurin in Indiana with the Pacers’ No. 31 pick and Caleb Houstan of Mississauga, Ont., went No. 32 to the Orlando Magic. The Pacers appear ready to take a distinctively Canadian look into the 2022-23 NBA season, with Mathurin and Nembhard poised to join Canadians Chris Duarte and Oshae Brissett on the Indiana roster.

In much the same way that Canada’s men’s national soccer team is heading into a golden growth and stature opportunity with back-to-back FIFA World Cup qualifications in Qatar 2022 and Canada/U.S./Mexico in 2026, Canada Basketball has never had more depth in the form of NBA-calibre players.
