A fire deemed suspicious has destroyed a building and a home, forcing the evacuation of a downtown Brockville block.
The fire destroyed the former furniture store at 109 Perth Street, on the corner of Perth and Brock streets, as well as an adjacent home at 126 John Street.In all, there were 18 “exposures” to the massive blaze, including 14 homes and four vehicles, forcing the evacuation of an L-shaped residential block from the corner of Perth and Brock, eastward to John Street, then south on John to Pearl Street, added Paul.
Victim Services of Leeds and Grenville had set up the displace people in hotels in the meantime, he added.Paul was unsure as of Monday morning whether the owners of the affected structures have insurance. Brockville police on Monday warned residents to avoid the area “so emergency services can restore safety.”
“There is an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the fire,” police added, urging anyone who has any information regarding the incident to contact Detective Graham Coe at 613-342-0127 ext. 4245 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS. “We do see that the fire is suspicious,” the fire chief agreed, though he declined to discuss specifics while the matter is under investigation.Share this article in your social network
