against teams managed by former Bochy players. That group includes Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin, who was on the Wyoming trip. For the first time ever, Bochy and Nevin managed against one another in the Rangers’ 6-2 exhibition win Saturday. In May, they will do it for real.
Bochy has managed four current major league managers, two of them now AL West foes. In addition to Nevin, he managed Oakland’s Mark Kotsay, the Dodgers’ Dave Roberts and, briefly, the Cubs’ David Ross. Oakland bench coach Brad Ausmus, a former major league manager, also played for Bochy. The Rangers play 32 games against those teams in 2023.Bochy, who has 2,003 wins as a manager, isn’t yet Nick Saban against his protégés.
Los Angeles Angels interim manager Phil Nevin, left, and Shohei Ohtani stand in the dugout during the first inning of the team's baseball game against the Cleveland Guardians, Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2022, in Cleveland. “He was going to be traded and he wanted to stay and play so badly,” Bochy said. “So I told him, I’d catch him. He really hadn’t caught in a while. I put him back there. It was one of the worst catching exhibitions I’ve ever seen. I think he knew it, too. So he got himself ejected.”
