The most exceptional thing about Mount Vernon is Ariel-Foundation Park, which opened in 2015 on 250 acres that once housed one of the largest window glass manufacturing plants in the world, Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) Works No. 11.
MOUNT VERNON, Ohio – In 1976, PPG closed a large glass-making factory just south of downtown Mount Vernon. Forty years later, the property reemerged as an extraordinary park, filled with industrial-era ruins, terraced hills, walkways, waterways, sculptures and a 240-foot-high observation tower overlooking it all.
All this and a bonus – you’re less than 5 miles from leafy Gambier, home of Kenyon College, which is worth a short visit, as well., which opened in 2015 on 250 acres that once housed one of the largest window glass manufacturing plants in the world, Pittsburgh Plate Glass Works No. 11. Other sights in the park: Walls and framing from the former Coxey Building, built in 1900 and first used to produce steel, a short-lived effort that was supplanted by glass making a few years later. The building was made with steel salvaged from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair that was transported to Ohio on circus railroad cars. Some of that steel is used in art installations throughout the park.
From the fountain, my husband and I browsed the stores up and down Main Street, stopping and shopping at Paragraphs Bookstore, Kudos Art Co-op, Woodson Co. and Almost Famous Sweets and Sodas., a Mount Vernon tradition for more than 100 years, an elegant space with images of Virginia’s Mount Vernon on the walls and which in 2022 was named to Yelp’s list of Top 100 Restaurants in the United States., a stately Georgian revival structure opened in 1925, with seating for 1,000.
We browsed briefly at the Kenyon College Bookstore, grabbed a drink at Wiggin Street Coffee and strolled the length of Kenyon’s campus, which has to be among the most beautiful in the state, with its imposing, Gothic revival structures lining the walkways.
