Prior to becoming a McGill dean in August 2021 — as well as a professor in the department — she was associate dean of research, PhD and master of science programs, and the E. Marie Shantz Chair of Digital Technology at Queen’s University’s Smith School of Business. A In passing, Chan mentions that she placed first in Jamaica in a prestigious high school exam, much like her mother before her.
“Still, rather than get thwarted by these acts of racism, you become better and stronger for it. This just strengthened my resolve to push forward,” says Chan, who is married to Chinese-Guyanese physician Michael Chan, a fellow Rhodes Scholar. “These roadblocks were never limiting in the sense of being terminal. They might have made it harder to get to that goal, but they never deterred me.
