By now, annuals will be at their best. So, too, various perennials including delphinium, ligularia, hosta, monkshood, roses and lilies. Peonies will have bloomed by now and what a year it was for these queens of the garden! I must admit, I now suffer from peony envy after viewing several gardens in my neighbourhood, only to realize that mine, as great as they were this year, pale by comparison. Remember to cut off spent blooms to prevent the plant’s energy from going to seed production.
Be on the lookout for black spot on roses. Overwatering, wet foliage and poor air circulation are the causes of this unwelcome fungus. Black spot is best treated by removing the affected leaves as soon as the spots appear. Then treat the roses with a homemade solution of 14 grams of baking soda mixed with one litre of warm water. Add another 14 grams of liquid to the solution, stir, transfer to a bottle and generously spray the leaves of your rose plant.
Containers will be at their peak this time of the year. Regular watering, fertilizing and deadheading will ensure continuous bloom to the end of the season.
