NEW: New York’s governor Andrew Cuomo announced a new ban on gatherings of over 500 people set to begin on Friday. For Broadway shows, it goes into effect immediately

to offer discount show tickets throughout the crisis. But by Wednesday night, the speculation about the threat crystalized into hard reality when a theater usher was diagnosed with Covid-19. The usher had recently worked at the new musicaltwo popular and high-trafficked shows, and it’s too soon to tell if the individual might have infected anyone else.

The closure will be the most extreme since the theaters went dark for two days after 9/11. In an interview with CNN Thursday morning, Mayorsaid that he was expecting an announcement soon but hoped something less severe would come to fruition. “I don’t want to see Broadway go dark if we can avoid it,” he said. “I want to see if we can strike some kind of balance.”

On Thursday, the dam broke. The Metropolitan Museum of Art became one of the first major institutions to opt for an open-ended shutdown, after two of their employees began showing symptoms of the virus.
