He says the project may have to be adapted

The leader of Nottingham City Council says progress on the Broad Marsh project may now be 'slower' because of the Government's decision not to contribute £20 million towards it. The authority had submitted a bid to the Government's Levelling Up Fund totalling £57 million, with two of the elements focused on Nottingham's Island Quarter and improvements to Bulwell's town centre.

"It might now be that this decision means progress will be made slower and it is always possible with projects like these that they may have to be adapted along the way, but we are still determined to deliver the full project. There is already work ongoing from the funding that we have already secured as well."

People in Nottingham were also saddened that the Broad Marsh had not been allocated the £20 million. John Orme, 72, from Chilwell, said: "It's all a bit of a mess really because it seems to have been standing there for ages now and it does seem to be partly done, but you just wonder how long it's going to be left like this now. When you look around Lister Gate, there are so many shops closing now and I'm sure it's because of the knock-on effect of the Broad Marsh.

Nottingham City Council's past financial issues include the £40 million collapse of Robin Hood Energy and the misspending of ring-fenced money, the latter of which is now predicted to eventually cost the council up to £51 million. But responding to the argument that such issues may have influenced the Government's levelling up decision, Councillor David Mellen said: "It's not an argument which squares with the success that we have had in the past.
